The Stroh’s Ice Cream Factory is back in business, this time as the Detroit Vineyards. Owner and founder Blake Kownacki recently opened Detroit Vineyards on Gratiot Avenue in the historic location which once produced Detroit’s premium ice cream. After having lived in California and Australia Detroit native Kownacki returned to the city, forming Detroit Vineyards in 2014. Operating out of an old garage converted into a micro-winery, the first vintage was produced in 2016. Kownacki later (re)discovered the Stroh’s building and, after much hard work, determination, and love, moved Detroit Vineyards to its current location.
The winery grows and produces superior wine options that appeal to experienced wine connoisseurs and novices alike. Visitors are sure to be delighted by such options as Riesling, Traminette, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc Rosé and Pinot Noir. Dry and sweet ciders are also available, as well as aromatic meads that are produced with fresh honey straight from Detroit Vineyards’ own beekeeping farm. The winery’s 15,000-square-foot facility contains the production area, a large capacity tasting room, and a more private tasting room that can be reserved for parties of 20 or more. Detroit Vineyards hosts weekly entertainment such as live music events, dance classes, and more, all geared towards making this new venue an exciting place for visitors far and wide to enjoy.
The Detroit Vineyards sources most of its grapes from vineyards all over Michigan. Partnering with Michigan State University, Detroit Vineyards has developed community programming to create small grape-growing plots in the Detroit. Equipment, plants and training are provided at no cost to help participating metro area residents start vineyards on their property. Once their crops yield sustainable harvests (usually in the third year) the residents will have the opportunity to sell the grapes to Detroit Vineyards.
